HICKORY - Fletcher Warner Russ, Jr., died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Emporia, Va. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Hickory, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Colley. The burial will be held at 2 p.m., in Shumate Family Cemetery, N. Wilkesboro, NC.He was born Sep. 24, 1948, in Key West, Fla., to Fletcher Grady and Cecile Carrigan Russ. He was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and was a long term member of the Mens Bible Class, former Sunday School teacher, and served as a member of the church council and user, church volley ball team, youth league basketball coach. He was employed with Life of Virginia Ins. Co., as the Hickory Office Manager. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Yeoman Third Class, serving from 1966-1969. He served on the USS Topeaka-Clg. 8, USS Rich DD 820. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia. Survivors are his wife, Judy Shumate Russ of the home; son, Mathew Russ of Newton; daughter, Holly Russ of the home; parents, Grady and Cecile Russ of Burlington; step-sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Amanda Jenkins of Granite Falls and Greg and Elaine Jenkins of Raleigh; grandson, Zack Jenkins of Granite Falls; brothers, John Russ of Chesapeake, Va. and Adrian Russ of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Ruth Roberts of Mahawk, NY and Teresa Christopher of Highland Lake, NY; and his former wife, Jo Patra Donovant Russ of Reidsville. Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church. The funeral was conducted at Mount Olive Lutheran Church by the Rev. Thomas Colley. Burial was in the Shumate Family Cemetery in North Wilksboro, NC Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 N. Center St., Hickory, NC 28601. He was born on August 12, 1953 at the US Naval Submarine Base in New London, CT to Grady and Cecile Russ, as the 4th of 5 children. He is survived by sons Abraham W. Russ, Jonathon G. Russ, and daughter Alexis Russ; granddaughters Harlowe Russ and Hayley Winter, and grandson Logan Bridges; his parents Grady and Cecile Russ of Burlington, NC; sisters Ruth Roberts and Theresa Christopher, and one brother, John Russ. He was predeceased by his oldest brother, Fletcher Grady Warner Russ, Jr. He served in the US Navy on board the USS Wood during the Vietnam War, and later attended Middle Georgia College, in Cochran Ga. Adrien was a musician and loved the outdoors. He loved to cook and read. He moved to Colorado in 1993 and fell in love with the Rocky Mountains, spending his remaining 21 years there. A private Inurnment of ashes took place at 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Fort Logan National Cemetery Denver, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be made to the: Trinity Worship Center Building Fund, 3157 South Church Street Burlington, North Carolina, 27215 |
